During the 2024/25 season the 黑料不打烊 introduced the Student-Athlete of the Month Award for the four different 黑料不打烊 divisions/age brackets: Eastern, West Female, West U18 Male (U18 Prep, U17 Prep, U17) and West U15 Male (U15 Prep and U15) .

This award is aimed at recognizing the student-athletes within the 黑料不打烊 and acknowledges their hard work, dedication, commitment, leadership, academics and community impact.

We would like to congratulate these four student-athletes, who were all nominated by their programs, for their hard work in the month of February.

East Division – Liam Befus, King’s-Edgehill School

“Liam is a Grade 12 student who exemplifies excellence both in the classroom and in athletics. He recently earned an outstanding 97.2% average on his most recent report card, demonstrating his strong commitment to academic achievement.

Beyond his academic success, Liam serves as the captain of our team, where he provides exceptional leadership, accountability, and consistency throughout the year. He leads by example every day and has played a significant role in fostering a positive and competitive team culture.

Liam鈥檚 leadership extends beyond the rink. He is a respected leader within our school community, serving as a prefect and as Captain of Osprey House. His ability to balance high-level academics, athletics, and meaningful school involvement makes him a truly deserving candidate for Student-Athlete of the Month.”

West Female Division – Saysha Brace, Delta Hockey Academy

“Saysha has been the definition of commitment to her game and her academics. She is the type of athlete who, no matter what obstacles are in front of her, continues to work relentlessly to create opportunities for herself. Her mindset has led to her earning a college scholarship to play at SAIT in Calgary next year.

Saysha commutes over an hour each way to be part of our program, works multiple jobs, and still balances her academic responsibilities at a high level. Despite the demands on her time, she shows up prepared, focused, and ready to contribute to her team and schooling every single day.

Her work ethic and ability to persevere are well beyond her years. Saysha is a role model within our academy, demonstrating what it truly means to be a Student Athlete, be accountable to your teammates, and represent your program with pride. She is extremely deserving of this recognition.”

West Male U15 Division – Olan Ward, STAR Hockey Academy

“Olan exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA through the first semester. He is a leader within our program academically, consistently setting the standard for preparation, accountability, and work ethic in the classroom.”

West Male U18 Division – Linden Andersen, South Alberta Hockey Academy

“Linden exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete through his consistent dedication to excellence both in the classroom and within his team environment. He approaches his academic work with focus and pride, demonstrating strong organization, a positive attitude, and a willingness to challenge himself on projects and daily assignments. Linden is a natural leader in the dressing room, setting a standard for work ethic, respect, and accountability that his teammates follow. He consistently supports others, offering encouragement and helping create a culture of unity and brotherhood.

Beyond the classroom and rink, Linden represents his program with integrity through his involvement in school and community activities, showing maturity well beyond his years. His commitment to personal growth, teamwork, and responsibility makes him a role model among his peers. Linden鈥檚 character, leadership, and dedication make him highly deserving of recognition as an outstanding student-athlete.”

The MHL Draft consisted of 10 rounds, with 118 players being selected.

Bishop’s College School (3), Mount Academy (3) and Notre Dame Hounds (3) led the way with three 黑料不打烊 student-athletes selected. King’s-Edgehill School (1), Stanstead College (1) all had at least one player selected.聽

Rothesay Netherwood School, who will join the 黑料不打烊 for the 2025/26 season, had five student-athletes selected:

U15: Jayden Ni, Delta Hockey Academy White

In his first season in the 黑料不打烊 the South Surrey, BC forward had a division best 9 goals and 13 points in 6 U15 games during the month of September.

U15 Prep: Chayse Fedoriuk, OHA Edmonton

The Sherwood Park, AB defenseman leads all skaters with 8 assists and 11 points through 4 games this season. His 3 goals are a division best among defensemen.

U17: Kesler Hamilton, RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna

During the month of September Hamilton led all skaters with 11 assists and 19 points in 8 games. The Kelowna, BC forward has chipped in 8 goals in his 8 games, while recording at least a point in every game this season.

U17 Prep: Jaggar John, OHA Edmonton

The 2024 黑料不打烊 U15 Prep Western Championship MVP picked-up where he finished off last season as he has a division best 14 points in 5 games with OHA Edmonton. The Saskatoon Blades third round pick at the 2024 WHL Draft has 4 goals and 10 assists on the season.

U18 Prep: River Arnason, RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg

Arnason leads all skaters with 5 goals while his 10 points are tied for the division lead. The Winnipeg, MB forward has recorded 84 points in 52 games the last two seasons, split between the U17 Prep and U15 Prep divisions.

Female U18 Prep: Maddie Kaiser, Balmoral Hall School

In her first season with Balmoral Kaiser has a division best 8 assists and 13 points in 3 games this season. The Winnipeg, MB forward spent the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons with St. Mary’s academy recording 38 points in 55 games.

Eastern U17: Sebastien Bourgeau, CIH Academy

The Orleans, ON netminder has played two games with CIH Academy this season going 2-0-0 with 1 shutout. His 2 wins, 1 shutout. 0.50GAA and .986SV% are all a division best.

Eastern U18: Jack Sangster, King’s-Edgehill School

Sangster leads the 黑料不打烊 Eastern U18 division with 7 goals and 9 points in 5 games this season. This is the Bedford, NS forwards first season in the 黑料不打烊.

LOCATION AND YEAR PROGRAM ENTERED 黑料不打烊

Located in Windsor, Nova Scotia, King鈥檚-Edgehill School combines a scenic, small-town locale with world-class academic, athletic, and extracurricular facilities. Ninety-two acres in the heart of one of Canada鈥檚 most beautiful provinces, we are located 45 minutes from Nova Scotia鈥檚 capital city Halifax and the Halifax International Airport. This will be our first season in the 黑料不打烊.

EDUCATION

King鈥檚-Edgehill is a Canadian Accredited Independent School (CAIS). What that means in Canada is, education is provincially mandated, and most CAIS Schools are required to meet ministry guidelines.

However, CAIS schools provide more. Our national standards and process are congruent with the internationally accepted criteria and core standards adopted by the International Council Advancing Independent School Accreditation (ICAISA) and updated annually based on current research and exceptional practices. The Standards Council of the CAIS Board reviews and approves all changes to the accreditation guidelines.

• What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
  • Our teachers are the biggest supporters of our students here at KES. With small class sizes, teachers work one-on-one with students. Each student is also paired with an academic advisor who meets with each student twice a week. Study hall is always provided on the road for our students, which is monitored by a coach.
• How are grades monitored and how often?
  • Grades are monitored constantly by teachers and academic advisors. Teachers, advisors, and coaches are in constant communication about students and their grades.
• How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
  • In the Senior School (Grades 10-12) students can opt for honours courses by subject domains, a system known as ‘setting’ rather than ‘streaming’. Each incoming student works with our academic coordinator to set them up with the right course selection.
• Do you have an academic probation policy?
  • We do have an academic probation period. If our students receive multiple poor effort grades on a report card, they are not able to travel for sports for two weeks. Until they are in good standing with their academics this will continue.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

• Do you offer a billeting program or a dormitory for non-local student athletes?
  • KES is a true boarding school. Boarding schools are a home away from home for many children whose parents are looking to give their children the tools they need to do and be more. Enrolling your child in a boarding school means giving them the freedom to form lifelong friendships and experience an educational experience unlike any other. Parents send their children to KES because they know they are providing them with the best opportunities to be more.

STUDENT-ATHLETE HEALTH

• We are fortunate to have a nurse on campus for students to access day-to-day. We also work with an athletic therapist on campus. Students are able to book appointments to have treatment done with our athletic therapist. Our athletic therapist also travels on the road with us for game coverage.

  • Our teams play 40-50 games a season, including 黑料不打烊 regular season and championships, exhibition games, and tournaments.

  • Our athletes take part in daily purposeful on-ice training. We strive to develop individual skills, instill competitiveness, and teach team tactics. Our athletes are also fortunate to work with a full-time strength and conditioning coach. We also boast state-of-the-art athletics facilities both on and off campus.

Balmoral Hall School, Fort Erie International Academy, King鈥檚-Edgehill School, Lower Canada College and Selwyn House School all were accepted into the 黑料不打烊, bringing the league to a total of 37 member programs across Canada and the USA.

Located in Winnipeg, MB, Balmoral Hall School was founded in 1901 and is currently the longest standing prep hockey program in Manitoba with 18 years鈥� experience. Balmoral Hall will join the Female Prep division.

The 黑料不打烊 offers several advantages that closely align with our school’s goals and values, ensuring a seamless continuation of our commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics,鈥� said Regan Boulton, Interim Director of Hockey and Head Coach.

Located in Fort Erie, ON, a border city just minutes away from Western New York, Fort Erie International Academy (FEIA) was founded in 2019 as a Private Secondary School. FEIA has appeared as a guest team in the 黑料不打烊 Eastern Division this season and will add teams to the Eastern U17 and U18 divisions.

“This is an exciting time for FEIA hockey.聽 We are thrilled to be part of the 黑料不打烊 as it will allow our student-athletes to continue their growth and development both on and off the ice.聽 This provides excellent exposure and opportunities across the Country. King鈥檚-Edgehill School is located in Windsor, NS, about 45 minutes from Halifax. Founded in 1788, King鈥檚-Edgehill School is Canada’s first independent School. King鈥檚-Edgehill School has appeared as a guest team in the 黑料不打烊 Eastern Division this season and will play in the Eastern U18 division.

Being a part of the 黑料不打烊 will provide our student athletes the opportunity to continue to develop and grow in Canada’s premier education-based hockey league. Founded in 1909, Lower Canada College (LCC) is a coed day school located in Montreal, QC. LCC will play in the Eastern U17 division next season.

“LCC is excited to join the 黑料不打烊 at the U17 level. The league shares many common values with our program and school. By joining we 黑料不打烊, we feel that our student-athletes will maximize their development opportunities in high school hockey,” added Christian Viau, Director of Athletics.

Selwyn House School, established in 1908 and located in Westmount, QC, is an all-boys K-12 institution committed to academic excellence. Selwyn House will play in the Eastern U17 division next season.

“Gaining membership into the 黑料不打烊 further demonstrates our dedication to providing our student-athletes with opportunities to grow and graduate prepared for the next level of education and athletics. The 黑料不打烊 is a prestigious league recognized for developing and showcasing elite hockey players across Canada. At the same time, we are staying true to Selwyn House’s mission and vision by aligning with an education-based league just as focused on character development and academic pursuits as it is to excellence on the ice,” said Mike Maurovich, Director of Athletics for Selwyn House School.

The new additions brings the Eastern Division to a total of 20 teams and 13 member programs. The Female U18 Prep division will see 14 teams from 12 member programs competing in 2024/25.
