East Division – Kenton Wong, Okanagan Hockey Ontario

“Kenton has won our Academic Award for grade 12 students in our Program with the following marks: Business 91%, Economics 90%, Functions 92%, Calculus 93%, Interdisciplinary Studies 93% and English 80% for an academic average of 90%. Kenton consistently demonstrated focus, determination and an unwavering work-ethic on his academics over the course of the season. He actively volunteered in community events (public skating and u5 hockey helper multiple times). Kenton managed to be over a point per game in the 黑料不打烊 East he never lost site of his post-secondary education goals and lead by example in the classroom and study hall’s all season.”

West Division – Nathan Okoloise, RHA Kelowna

“Every time I ask coaches for suggestions for our student-athletes of the month, Nathan’s name comes up. Nathan is consistently showing up as one of the most mature, responsible, kind, and intelligent student-athletes we get to work with.

His teachers all highlight the positive energy he brings to each class, what a role model he is, how he prioritizes his work and holds himself to an extremely high standard. Nathan’s coach enjoyed sitting in on report card meeting with myself and Nathan, just to hear how positive and praiseful his teacher’s comment were. His Chemistry teacher said “You are such a steady, positive presence in our learning community, and I truly enjoyed working with you. You naturally lead by example through your work ethic and the way you treat others. It has been a genuine pleasure teaching you this team.”

Having worked with Nathan for the past year at RINK Kelowna, I have watched him continuously set the standard for what a true student-athlete should be: disciplined, resilient, responsible, and deeply committed to excellence both on ice and in the classroom. I have also been able to get to know Nathan personally by driving him home on occasion, running into him in the community while he played soccer with his billeted siblings, and by having him over to visit my billeted player and join us for dinner which turned into baseball lessons with my son. During these interaction, Nathan would carry himself with such decorum, not common at his age. It was always a pleasure to be around Nathan.

While maintaining the demanding training schedule that our U17 Prep teams had, Nathan was still able to complete Grade 11 with a 95.4% average and solid 4.0 GPA. He did not achieve these high marks but taking the easy road either, Nathan challenged himself by taking courses a grade up including Pre-Calculus 12 (94%), and World History 12 (91%). This success can only be achieve with a rare dedication and work ethic to excel. Nathan’s U17Prep Team also fought their way all season to successfully take home the 2026 黑料不打烊 Championship showing that hard work and determination pays off.

Nathan is the epitome of a student-athlete and deserves all of the credit and praise for his accomplishments.”

East Division – Joey Downey, Selwyn House School

“Joey Downey is an outstanding example of a student-athlete whose impact extends far beyond athletic performance. As an honours student and one of only two 黑料不打烊 student-athletes enrolled in Selwyn House School’s rigorous Grade 11 Science Program, Joey has demonstrated exceptional academic and community commitment while balancing the demands of being a three-sport varsity athlete in football, hockey and baseball.

This year, he was inducted into the prestigious Sportsman鈥檚 Guild, recognizing his leadership, sportsmanship, coachability, enthusiasm, and positive influence within Selwyn鈥檚 athletic community. As the veteran catcher for the varsity baseball team, Joey played a key leadership role in guiding Selwyn to its first-ever RSEQ Baseball Championship. His steady presence and strong defensive performance behind the plate in both the semifinal and championship games were instrumental in securing the title. Over his three seasons with the program, he helped strengthen the team鈥檚 culture, consistency, and competitiveness, leaving a lasting impact on its success.

Beyond the classroom and playing fields, Joey embraced experiential learning through two hands-on courses. In the fall, he took part in Woodshop, where he designed and built his own NHL-style hockey locker, demonstrating creativity and craftsmanship. Since January, he’s been part of the demanding ALONE Outdoor Education course, earning his Wilderness First Aid Certification and completing a five-day wilderness survival expedition in the Laurentians. Throughout the experience, Joey displayed resilience and a strong sense of community by supporting and encouraging his fellow students.

He further strengthened his academic profile by achieving his DELF B2 French certification and has consistently embraced leadership opportunities, including attending the Canadian Student Leadership Conference, serving as a student ambassador at post-secondary events, and volunteering with Selwyn鈥檚 Learn to Skate Program, which he will co-lead next year.

Through his dedication, character, and commitment to the Selwyn Veritas values, Joey Downey exemplifies the qualities of a 黑料不打烊 Student-Athlete of the Month.”

West Female Division – Brooke Dolynchuk, RHA Kelowna

“Brooke is a grade 12 student, graduating this month. She currently has a 94% average. She is well liked by teammates, coaches, and trainers. She is described as a hardworking, mature, and responsible student who approaches learning with determination. Brooke communicates clearly and works well with others and brings positive energy to all of her classes.

Her Chemistry teacher mentions Brooke’s deep understanding of concepts and principles and how she was even able to compare how her training at RINK uses Le Chatelier’s principle by demonstrating how factors like breath rate, temperature, and hydration impact blood chemistry.

Brooke has a very bright future, and we are so excited to see what successes she has after her time with RINK and at GESS.”

West Male U15 Division – Liam Pratt, Okanagan Hockey Academy

“Liam has demonstrated strong character, work ethic, and consistency throughout the month, standing out as a student-athlete who continues to engage fully even during a period when it can be easy to shift into 鈥渟ummer mode.鈥�

In the classroom, Liam is a high-achieving and disciplined student who takes pride in his academic performance. He currently holds an impressive 93% in Math 10 while completing the course as a Grade 9 student, reflecting both his ability and his commitment to academic excellence. Liam consistently applies himself across all subject areas and shows a strong willingness to learn and improve. His academic habits demonstrate responsibility, focus, and a clear understanding of the importance of maintaining high standards in his education.

Beyond the classroom, Liam has continued to challenge himself through involvement in extracurricular activity, including participation on the high school Mountain Biking team. This commitment highlights his drive to stay active, push himself in new environments, and balance multiple demands while maintaining strong performance both academically and athletically.

Within the OHA program, Liam has also demonstrated maturity and character through his actions in everyday situations. On the way to a field workout, he took the initiative to stop and help an elementary school student fix their bike, showing genuine care, leadership, and respect for others in the community. This moment reflects his awareness of others and his willingness to step in and make a positive impact without hesitation.

“She is one of the players who sets the standards every time she works on the ice and in the gym. She has grown a lot this season. She was a bit quiet when she arrived but grew into a leader who speaks up amongst her peers. She has earned the respect of her teammates. Bentley made a huge impact on the ice.”

“Lux has demonstrated outstanding performance during the final stretch of the season and throughout the playoffs, consistently elevating his game when it matters most. His dedication to both his athletic and academic responsibilities exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete.

West Female Division – Saysha Brace, Delta Hockey Academy

“Saysha has been the definition of commitment to her game and her academics. She is the type of athlete who, no matter what obstacles are in front of her, continues to work relentlessly to create opportunities for herself. Her mindset has led to her earning a college scholarship to play at SAIT in Calgary next year.

Saysha commutes over an hour each way to be part of our program, works multiple jobs, and still balances her academic responsibilities at a high level. Despite the demands on her time, she shows up prepared, focused, and ready to contribute to her team and schooling every single day.

Her work ethic and ability to persevere are well beyond her years. Saysha is a role model within our academy, demonstrating what it truly means to be a Student Athlete, be accountable to your teammates, and represent your program with pride. She is extremely deserving of this recognition.”

East Division – Connor Alward, Mount Academy

“Connor Alward is a 2010-born goaltender with the Mount Academy U17 Prep program, hailing from Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Connor joined Mount Academy this year following a strong season with Pictou County U15 AAA Major, and he has made an immediate and meaningful impact on both our school and hockey environments.

Although Connor may not be big in stature, he brings a very big positive attitude and is a larger-than-life personality within our school community. He is an outstanding young man who provides a genuine spark to our program. Connor can often be found in classrooms, study halls, on the bus, or even in hotel hallways working with fellow students on academic projects鈥攐r simply offering support and being a steady presence for teammates navigating the highs and lows of a demanding season at Mount Academy.

On the ice, Connor was initially slated to start a limited number of games. Through his work ethic, preparation, and performance, he has put himself in a position where he is being considered for more starts as we move into the next phase of our schedule. The players in front of him respect him and trust the quality he brings to each opportunity.

Recently, Connor competed in a demanding four-game set in Montr茅al, Quebec, and Cornwall, Ontario, during a stretch in which several players were sidelined by flu. The illness affected two of our goaltenders in our three-goalie system, leaving Connor without a backup for the weekend. Facing heavy workloads鈥攐ften 45+ shots per game鈥擟onnor battled through difficult outcomes, held his head high, and did everything he could for his team. While it was not an easy weekend, it was one in which Connor demonstrated resilience, maturity, and a positive mindset that helped steady and support his teammates.

Connor Alward is an extraordinary student who always submits high quality work. He is a leader in the classroom, often offering help and guidance to his peers that are facing academic challenges. He sets high expectations for himself and works hard to ensure he is meeting his goals. Connor is a dedicated student-athlete that always submits work on time, or even early, no matter how busy his schedule is.”

West Female Division – Ryann Faulkner, Okanagan Hockey Academy

“Ryann Faulkner exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete. Her unwavering dedication to academics, teammates, and off-ice habits consistently sets the standard within the OHA program. Ryann can always be counted on to show up prepared and give her best effort, regardless of any challenges or obstacles in her way.

Maddox goes above and beyond in the classroom, regularly offering help to others and approaching every task with enthusiasm and care. Maddox approaches his learning with dedication, integrity, and a genuine desire to do his best. Outside of academics, Maddox demonstrates compassion and service through his volunteer time with the SuperHEROS hockey program, which he describes as both fun and rewarding. “Seth Baptiste is Grade 12 student from Red Pheasant First Nation and he represents the Indigenous Sports Academy out of Saskatoon.

“She has been a consistent leader in her effort level on the ice and in the gym. She approaches her training with professionalism and focus. She pushes herself in the gym and has been making great gains. This is her first year with 黑料不打烊 and she has made an impression. She is a strong academic and sets herself up for success everyday with how she approaches and completes her studies. Emersynn is a wonderful and kind hearted person. She is open and present with any of her teammates. She will work with any player she is asked to. Her hard work has gotten her special team opportunities and someone people can look to. I think she is a great athlete for this recognition.”

“Dusty, in December, you met adversity with an injury that took you out of the game and school. However, your work ethic and dedication to your goals, both on and off the ice, were evident as you stayed in communication and did everything you could to put yourself in a strong position upon your return. West Male U18 Division – Holden Tamm, Okanagan Hockey Academy

“Holden Tamm sets the standard for what it means to be a high-achieving student-athlete within our program and across the 黑料不打烊. Holden has demonstrated outstanding commitment to his academics, earning exceptional results as a Grade 11 student while managing the demands of a rigorous academy and travel schedule. He has achieved a 96% in Math 12, 100% in Chemistry 11, and 95% in Law 12, highlighted by a near-perfect performance in senior-level coursework. These results are matched by a perfect attendance record, both at home and at the academy, reflecting his consistency, discipline, and prioritization of his education.

On the ice, Holden鈥檚 performance has been equally impressive – he has posted the league鈥檚 second-best win total, Goals Against Average, and Save Percentage. His play in net has showcased composure, competitiveness, and reliability, providing his team with confidence every time he stepped onto the ice.

Beyond academics and statistics, Holden continues to lead by example in all areas of academy life. He consistently sets the standard for dressing room cleanliness, demonstrates exemplary on-the-road behaviour, and maintains a strong team-first mentality. “Emma has established herself as one of the top goalies in the league, consistently delivering elite performances and giving our team a chance to win every single game. Her work ethic is unmatched 鈥� she鈥檚 the first one at the rink every day, prepared, focused, and ready to compete.

Beyond her on-ice success, Emma is an outstanding student who excels in school and stays on top of every responsibility. She manages her academic workload with maturity and discipline, setting a strong example for her teammates.

“Adam has a 97.75% average in his courses. He’s currently taking top academic courses in a mixture of both grade 11 and 12. He is looked at as a leader on and off the ice. Adam was an active participate in our school and community Remembrance Day Service, reading a poem at each service.听 Adam is a well-regarded student by both peers and school staff.”

“Mena Bhatt is an outstanding example of what it means to be a true student-athlete. Her commitment to excellence both on and off the ice sets her apart as a leader and role model within our program.

Academically, Mena continues to excel, demonstrating consistent effort, organization, and pride in her work. She balances her athletic responsibilities with her studies exceptionally well, setting a strong example for her teammates through her discipline and time management. Her teachers frequently speak to her maturity, focus, and willingness to go above and beyond in every subject.

West Male U15 Division – Ryan Koenig, RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg

“Ryan maintains an above-90s average in all of his classes and perseveres when challenged academically. Ryan exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete, always prioritizing his academics and ensuring his class work is done and done well. In class, Ryan is an engaged leader who does not shy away from hard work. Ryan is new to our program this year and is showing up in all the best ways possible!”

West Male U18 Division – Carter Gilchrist, South Alberta Hockey Academy

“Carter currently has an average in the low 90’s. He is willing to help his teammates during our study hall sessions with their understanding of class content. He also leads by example in the gym and on the ice through his relentless work ethic. His teachers have mentioned how he displays maturity and commitment to his studies in the classroom.”

For the 2024/25 season the 黑料不打烊 is proud to introduce the Student-Athlete of the Month Award for the four different 黑料不打烊 divisions/age brackets: Eastern, West Female, West U18 Male (U18 Prep, U17 Prep, U17) and West U15 Male (U15 Prep and U15) .

This award is aimed at recognizing the student-athletes within the 黑料不打烊 and acknowledges their hard work, dedication, commitment, leadership, academics and community impact.

We would like to congratulate these four student-athletes, who were all nominated by their programs, for their hard work in the month of June.

East Division – Ethan Butler, Fort Erie International Academy

“Ethan has consistently demonstrated strong leadership by holding his teammates accountable and helping to reinforce the culture we are building at FEIA. His respectful attitude, tireless work ethic, and presence around the school set a high standard for others to follow. As a recent graduate, Ethan leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered as part of the foundation of our tradition. He has made a lasting impact on our community, and we are grateful for his contributions.”

West Female Division – Audrey Church, Delta Hockey Academy

“Audrey has been with the Delta (and attended North Delta Secondary School) for all five years of high school. She recently graduated with honours, meaning she was an honour roll student and earned grades of 86% or more on every report card in her five years of high school. This is an accomplishment worthy of recognition on its own and is really extraordinary when you consider the demands of training and travel.

Her final marks in her grade 12 courses are as follows:

English First Peoples – 92%
Fitness & Conditioning 12 – 100%

Audrey is an extremely kind and conscientious student. Her teachers describe her as “mature, hardworking and diligent”. Audrey will be attending UBC in the fall, where she’ll also be a member of the women’s hockey team.”

West Male U15 Division – Matsun Adams, Pilot Mound Hockey Academy

“Matsun is a true example of hard work, leadership, and camaraderie. Academically, Matsun consistently applies themselves, excelling in school and demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies. Their dedication extends beyond academics as dependable and inspiring dorm leader, where they foster a sense of unity and support among their peers.

Matsun’s role as a teammate is equally exceptional. Their positive attitude and selfless nature make them a vital presence in the dressing room and a source of encouragement for everyone around them. Matsun’s work ethic, leadership, and team spirit embody the values this award represents, making them an outstanding candidate for this recognition.”

West Male U18 Division – Ben Hakes, Okanagan Hockey Academy

“Ben exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated student-athlete, consistently demonstrating excellence both in the classroom and within our academy community. This term, Ben successfully balanced the demands of high-level hockey while excelling in three academically rigorous courses:

Pre-Calculus 11: 89%
English 11 (Honours-level difficulty): 82%
Physics 11: 93%

Ben鈥檚 academic results are impressive, but what truly distinguishes him is his incredible attitude and maturity. He brings a positive, driven approach to everything he does.

Ben is a leader among his peers and a role model on and off the ice. He fully embodies the values and standards of the 黑料不打烊.”

East Division – Leonard Ess, Okanagan Hockey Ontario

“Leo is in his third year with OHO U18 Prep. He is a defenseman who plays in all situations, missing only one game in the past two seasons. Leo is OHO’s all-time 黑料不打烊 games played leader at 56 regular season games played.

Leo has been an assistant captain for the past two years and has volunteered extensively in the community over his three years with OHO, including over 35 hours with Clarington Thunder Mini Watts, helping run practices for five year old beginner hockey. Leo has volunteered annually at a local Autism Awareness Fun Fair donating his time running games for LRCSS.

In his grade 10 year, Leo volunteered as a on-ice helper at all practices with his billet brothers U11 team. Leo currently is a volunteer assistant coach on OHO’s 2012 spring team helping with practices and games

Leo is a high-achiever academically. In his grade 10 year he had a 92% average, he had a 93% average in his grade 11 year and currently has a 94% average in his grade 12 year.

Grade 12: Leo currently has a 99% grade in Calculus and received a 98% in math functions and a 97% in Physics during semester 1

Grade 11: Leo finished with a 98% in both physics and math functions

Leo plans to attend University for Business and is currently going through his acceptance process. He leads by example in everything he does. He never misses practices, leads with his work-ethic in the gym daily, is constantly engaged with our U15/U16 teams and is a role model for our younger players.”

West Female Division – Haley Hunter, South Alberta Hockey Academy

“Her dedication and work ethic, both in the classroom and at the rink, have been nothing short of outstanding this semester.

Haley is currently balancing a demanding academic load; completing Math 30-1 online while also taking Chemistry 30 and Biology 30 in person. This is a challenging combination, yet she has managed it with impressive discipline. She is on the verge of completing her Math course and has remained on track all semester with minimal reminders from myself. This is a testament to her strong internal drive and mature time management skills.

These qualities will no doubt serve her well as she transitions to post-secondary studies at Lake Forest next season. Even during the off-season, Haley shows up every day ready to put in the work on the ice, maintaining her high standard of performance and leadership. Beyond academics and athletics, Haley continues to give back to the community. Over the past two months we have been volunteering at the local food shelter in town on Monday mornings. Haley has consistently signed up bi-weekly, which is much more often than most of her peers. Her willingness to step up whenever help is needed speaks volumes about her character.

Haley is having an exceptional semester, and I have no doubt she鈥檒l finish it as strongly as she started.”

West Male U15 Division – Owen Besserer, RHA Kelowna

“Owen Besserer is in his first year as a full-time student athlete in the 黑料不打烊 with the RINK Kelowna U15 team. Owen鈥檚 commitment and dedication, attitude and mentality, both on and off the ice is not often seen in one so young, but one all student-athletes should strive for. Owen is excelling in his Grade 8 classes and is taking Grade 9 math. Owen鈥檚 teachers describe him as a calm and focused presence in the classroom. He has a strong sense of teamwork and works well with his peers; he always remains focused while having a positive influence on those around him. He is always ready to maximize his efficiency on the ice, in the gym, or in the classroom. Owen is always ready to seize the day!”

West Male U18 Division – Kyson Lindsay, Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy

“Kyson has just been recognized as Eastmont High School鈥檚 Academic Top 10 for the entire school. This has never happened in our two year history in the 黑料不打烊 and since starting with Eastmont High School.

Kyson is a standout player and leader on our team and has consistently demonstrated exceptional academic performance over the past five months. Kyson鈥檚 academic achievements are noteworthy, with impressive final grades submitted just
last week:

• Chemistry: 99%
• Honors English: 93%
• Civics: 98%
• Math: 95%
• Physics: 98%

On the ice, Kyson’s commitment to excellence and strong work ethic have been truly remarkable. As an assistant captain, he provides valuable leadership both on and off the ice, playing a crucial role in our team鈥檚 success. Kyson leads by example every day, consistently showing his versatility, dedication, and outstanding qualities as a teammate.

Off the ice, in January Kyson launched his own initiative, Paws for a Wild Cause, a humanitarian effort in partnership with the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society to support animals in need. This initiative serves as a lifeline, providing shelter, medical care, and emergency assistance for vulnerable animals. Kyson recognized the critical role such support plays during times of crisis, especially during natural disasters like wildfires. Inspired to take action after witnessing the devastating impact of the wildfires in Los Angeles, he was driven by the urgency to bring hope and aid to animals during these challenging times. Kyson shared that the inspiration for the fundraiser name came from a creative play on the word 鈥渨ild鈥� connecting both the wildfires and the Wenatchee Wild.

Kyson Launched the Paws for a Wild Cause fundraiser on January 28, 2025, at the Wenatchee Wild WHL home game, inspiring his teammates to help raise awareness and funds for the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society. The fundraiser will run through February 9, coinciding with the Wenatchee Cup where players will continue supporting Kyson鈥檚 efforts. So far, they have raised $988.00 toward their $3000.00 goal.

Kyson鈥檚 dedication, leadership, community service, and commitment to excellence are undeniable. He exemplifies the true meaning of a student-athlete, inspiring those around him through his performance, work ethic, and ability to lead both on and off the ice.”
